quick link for contacts
I seem to do most of my activities based on contacts. although it's only a couple clicks away, it would be faster if there was a "quick link" for contacts either at the top or side of the screen

Could you provide any additional information on what you mean by a quick link?
We feel the quickest way to access a contact that you know you need to do something with is to search for them in the green menu area.
Alternatively, you could use the contact list.
How would a Quick Link for Contacts be different from these 2 existing options?
